She’s got a sparkle in her eye and a distinctive dolphin grin.
But Winter, the year-old dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, is missing a very significant part of her anatomy: a tail.

The young bottlenosed dolphin lost her tail and joint when she was caught in a crab trap near Indian River Lagoon, along Florida’s east coast. She was just a baby of three months.
The rope wrapped around her tail and cut off the blood supply. “It looked like paper,” said Dana Zucker, chief operating officer of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. “Bit by bit over the weeks it just fell off.”
The lack of a tail did not slow the bright dolphin down, however. Instead, Winter simply learned how to swim without — using a startling combination of moves that resemble an alligator’s undulating swimming style and a shark’s side-to-side tail swipes.

Though flippers are normally employed for steering and braking, Winter uses them to work up momentum.
Despite her ingenuity, scientists searched for a possible solution to the missing tail - and they may just have found one.
A prosthetic specialist has invented a prosthetic tail for Winter, including a gel sleeve that will not irritate her sensitive skin.
It is the first for a dolphin, and it remains to be seen how successful it will be over the long-term.
In the meantime, however, Winter the tailless dolphin is making history.

This looks like this dolphin is real healthy. That’s the way it should stay. No living animal should be captured and hurt in anyway.
That’s soooo sad that she lost her tail. I’m only twelve yrs old but i think that it is cruel and dispicable to treat animals (no matter that it is sea animals) that way. It is terribly repulsive. Only greedy nasty people would do something like that. If you agree with me post your comment so that i may read it. Even us kids can make an impact on the world and the rights of sea animals. If you think about it Sea animals have been on the earth longer than man. So let’s come together… All us KIDS!
Winter is sooo beautiful It makes me sooo sad that Us humans are to blame for all the problems these beautiful Animals face everyday, I hope something can be done to protect these beautiful dolphins and whales. I am going to do anything that i can to help save these beautiful animals
good on ya wendy hope you can get those kids together and help save our beautiful whales and dolphins
I totally agree with you Wendy, let us appeal to each and everyone, I mean to the whale eaters, ” when you eat the whale, it’s just like eating one of your brothers, because these whales are just like human beings. They beam love upon us everyday, ask anyone who meditate with them ! There’s so much to eat in this world, no one will die of hunger if they stop hunting whales. You hunters of whales, next time you are in front of a whale, you’re killing, stop for a while and feel the agony and you’ll know that you have a brother dying in front of you.
hey wendy!
I’m 12 years old too! I totally agree with you! Your entry on the dolphins really meant a lot to me. reply to me as soon as possible.
Aw!!! It’s so cute!! I agree that we should save these animals, mostly the whales and the dolphins, because they are coming very close to being extinct. SAVE OUR ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SAVE THE DOLPHINS THEY ARE CUTE AND FAIR UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE.
Hi! My name is seo hee. So, i understand that you are
saving the dolphins. I wish i was there to well, i am only 9 years old.
Well i agree.
I am 9 years old and I think we should totally save them there so beautiful and a good source for our world
we should save the whales. I Want to help out as much as i can but i do not know how! im 12 years young and want to help out as many whales from extintion as possible. Whales will become more and more extint due to them having up to 4 babies each lifetime. thats not much. so far almost 40,000 whales have been killed. it will take hundreds of years to mend the damage. you do the math, a whales lifetime can last up to 100 years of age. 4 babies with about 3000 left of each species.
I Want whales to be free of hunters and i hope you do too.
I Am a player of www.stardoll.com my account is EmoLovers , if you want to talk to me through that you can,
